Bathroom renovation ideas - turning old into modern
We enter the bathroom several times a day, start the day in it and end it just before going to bed. The bathroom is now more than just a "functional room" that is good for daily care and washing. It should be an oasis of well-being, a place to switch off, a room where you enjoy spending time. This can be realised with more or less elaborate renovations to your bathroom.
Aspects before the renovation
Basically, everything can be renovated or spruced up: Walls, ceiling and floor, the sanitary facilities, the utilisation of the existing storage space as well as the lighting and bathroom furniture. Among other things, you should think about this in advance:
- What stays, what goes? What is worth keeping and what is a beloved memento but has been tarnished by time? Replacing a worn cupboard or a worn-out tap can work wonders.
Make sure you take the time to consider this, as a renovation can be time-consuming and time-consuming. Afterwards, the bathroom will probably stay that way for many years. - Advice! Take advantage of advice! A good professional is honest and knows what to do. They can help you with the planning and estimate which work steps will take how much time. You don't always have to hire an expensive interior designer, go to a good DIY store or bathroom supplier for inspiration and advice.
- How many people? How many people use or will use the bathroom? How much space should be available? There are a number of ways to make optimum use of the available space.
- Budget? The financial framework naturally also plays a role in the renovation. You should be aware of what options you have. A professional will be able to tell you what is feasible and what is not.
Inspiration for bathroom renovations
We have put together some easy-to-implement and inexpensive bathroom ideas as well as ideas that require a more complex renovation .
Simple and inexpensive, but effective
- Fresh colours: Paint the ceiling and untiled walls! A new coat of paint that looks friendly and matches the tiles is definitely a good start. The choice of colour should be carefully considered. Colours that are too bright can quickly become overpowering and too much. They should be timeless. Intense colours can also be implemented with small splashes of colour, e.g. in the form of bathroom textiles.
- Lighting: Use indirect lighting: Bright ceiling light does little to create a cosy atmosphere. Use smaller lamps or lights, e.g. behind the bathroom mirror or directed at the wall. Candlelight also increases the feel-good factor.
- Noble materials: Use noble, soft materials and colours: These include glass, ceramic and wood, especially dark coloured ones with a coating. The combination with white or cream is right on trend and looks rustic yet chic at the same time.
- Pictures, plants, decorations: Pictures, plants and decorative elements are also allowed in the bathroom! The washroom is increasingly becoming a living space. So why not decorate it like the living room if space permits?
- Bathroom furniture: Storage options can be found in the washbasin, mirror cabinet, wall cabinet, tall cabinet.... the old out and new, harmonious furniture in. This will make your bathroom shine in a different light.
For even more change in the bathroom
- Tiles: Lay new tiles on the walls and floor. Large tile panels are particularly recommended here, as the joints are further apart and do not look like a restrictive grid. Light, friendly colours and small highlights, e.g. coloured mosaic tiles, make your bathroom unique.
- Room dividers: Installing half-height walls? It may sound cramped at first, but it's not. An additional wall can be used to separate the toilet, for example, or to create additional storage space by providing a place for another piece of bathroom furniture.
- Bathroom fittings: Designers are busy working on ultra-modern washbasin and shower fittings. If you want to spend less money and don't want to renovate the entire shower, you can also replace the old-fashioned mixer tap with something new at affordable prices.
- Bathtub or shower: Are you more of a bathtub or shower type? By replacing your old bathtub with a stylish shower, you can save space and enjoy a fashionable new look at the same time. However, there are also more and more chic bathtub models that bring variety to the bathing experience. Modern solutions tend to combine a bath and a floor-level shower element.
- Walk-in shower: if a shower, then the right one! A level-access, barrier-free shower is gradually becoming the standard in German bathrooms. Level-access showers, which can usually be installed completely seamlessly, look particularly open and elegant when combined with a glass enclosure. They are also available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
- Enlargement: To generally enlarge the bathroom, it is possible to combine it with another room that is hardly used or to install the toilet separately. Such conversions naturally require a somewhat higher investment. However, this can be cheaper than initially thought, especially with drywalls.
We hope you have found some inspiration for your bathroom renovation. And take a look at our shower solutions. We would be happy to advise you!
