Differences between EPS and XPS rigid foam boards
At Saxoboard, you can choose between EPS (expanded polystyrene) and XPS (extruded polystyrene) rigid foam as the base material for your shower element. Here we explain the differences between the two types of insulation. SaxoPET Eco is an ecologically sustainable alternative for your shower with maximum benefits in terms of compressive strength.
General information on the use of rigid polystyrene foam as a carrier material
- Thermal insulation and moisture protection
- easier transport and installation due to lower weight
- Better processing and design freedom
- No health hazards and ecologically sound
- Stable and durable
Polystyrene foam has established itself as a good thermal insulation and moisture protection material , which is ultimately essential for a great shower experience. It forms the basis or even the centrepiece of your shower. The plastic is also lightweight, which is an advantage for transport and installation. Nevertheless, it is characterised by its high strength. The polystyrene support material is an ideal basis for customised tiling.
EPS - polystyrene particle foam
The white polystyrene particle foam can be described as densely compressed polystyrene and has been used for insulation all over the world since the 1950s. At Saxoboard, this is manufactured in-house and is part of the basic equipment of your shower.
- dense structure as individually recognisable particles
- very high bulk density of 60-70 kg/m³, specially produced for Saxoboard
- Moisture-resistant and rot-proof
- Fire protection class B1 - flame retardant
- Production at fair prices
XPS - polystyrene extruder foam
Polystyrene extruded foam, which has been used primarily as buoyancy and buoyancy bodies since its first production in the 1940s, is characterised by its homogeneous closed cell structure, as it is produced as a continuous foam strand. It is produced in different colours(usually blue) to distinguish it from EPS. XPS enhances the properties of EPS and can be selected from Saxoboard for a small surcharge.
- Closed cell structure
- High pressure stability
- Slightly highermoisture resistance compared to EPS
- Fire protection class B1 - flame retardant
SaxoPET Eco
SaxoPET Eco is the world's first backing material for showers made from 100% recycled PET. As a manufacturer, we are particularly proud that with SaxoPET Eco we have been able to develop a backing material that is both sustainable and of particularly high quality in terms of its properties.
- 100% made from recycled PET
- Particularly sustainable use of raw materials
- Maximum compressive strength (compressive strength 110 tonnes/m²)
- Moisture-resistant and rot-proof
- Fire protection class B1 - flame retardant
